It is widely believed that in the matter of rape, men are always the perpetrators. This couldn't be farther from the truth. On the eve of a South African protest dubbed #NotInMyName, which called for an end to violent crimes against women, a 23-year old man was abducted on May 19 in Pretoria and raped repeatedly by three women.

After entering a community taxi that already had three female passengers, the man was reportedly forced to sit in the front seat where he was injected with a drug that knocked him out.

"He stated that he woke up in an unfamiliar room on a single bed," Police Captain Collette Weilbach said. "The female suspects then allegedly forced the man to drink an energy drink, before taking turns raping him numerous times a day."

That Sunday afternoon, he was taken to an open field in Benoni and left there half-dressed to fend for himself. A good Samaritan passing by picked him up and took him to get medical attention. The women are still at large.

In the U.S., nearly 1 in 71 men have reported being raped compared to almost 1 in 5 women according to a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. But in South Africa alone, it is estimated that over 500,000 rapes against men and women occur every year.

Keep in mind that because of the stigma associated with rape, cultural and gender considerations, as well as the difficulty in proving consent, many more incidents of sexual assault go unreported.

Also because of social expectations, men are even less likely to report rape. "Often, male survivors may be less likely to identify what happened to them as abuse or assault because of the general notion that men always want sex," said Jennifer Marsh, Vice President for Victim Services at RAINN.

To complicate matters further, some men can perform sexually even while being raped. Very mild stimulation or even an increase in stress levels can create erections in men when no "sexual stimulation is present." To many, this sends a message that the man consented.

Therefore, it doesn't matter if the victim is male or female. Any sexual activity that occurs without consent is a violation and against the law. No still means no and this man deserves justice.
