Social media is great. Because of Snapchat, the drama between Kim K. and Taylor S. reached next-level insanity. Not gonna lie, Snooki's response was EPIC:
So I'm definitely a fan and frequent user of all things social media. But there are some ground rules I follow with regards to what's kosher to post. 7 things I, and hopefully you, would NEVER do on social media are:
1. Graphic Photos
Look, I get you may want to send naked pics of yourself to some dude or chick on Snapchat. Believe me, I've been tempted. But I advise you to be quite careful when doing so. Who knows what happens to those photos in the digital space? Can you imagine your grandmother finding a picture of your crotch?! Kim K. does it all the time, but she's Kim K. When your selfies can be made into a book, take and send all the nudes you want. Until then, hold off.
2. Location Check-Ins
You want all your friends to know where you're at. That's fair, but guess what? People can hack into your social accounts and, if you've posted exactly where you're at, can literally find you. Just text your friends where you're at. It's easier and safer. Besides, you def don't want your haters to come hang with you and your squad.
3. (Insane) Party Pics
A photo drinking with some friends around a campfire is pretty innocuous. A photo of you doing a keg-stand totally topless and obviously drunk may not go over well with a potential employer.
4. Complaints about Specific People
You may HATE your boss, but NEVER post about that on social media. Even if you think all your privacy settings are in check, don't risk it. In fact, don't post anything mean about specific people. It's just so tacky. Take a hint from Katy Perry, and ALLUDE to the person you're throwing shade at.
5. Personal Relationship Drama
First things first, nobody cares about the fight you had last night. I don't say that to be mean, just to be honest. Call your friends about a fight you had. Call your mother. Don't post about it for the world to see.
6. Your Address
Most people don't post their home address. This is a time you want to be a crowd follower. Don't post your address. Ever.
7. The Golden Rule: Ask yourself if you're okay with this being online forever.
You NEVER KNOW what happens to that post or pic, who takes a screenshot of it, who saves it on their hard drive, which social media company keeps a backlog, etc. If it's a photo you wouldn't want your kids seeing, think twice about sharing it with the world. Even if you're not intending to share it with the world, assume that it will, because guess what? It totally can be.
