Are We Finally Getting A New Jay Electronica Album? Jay Z Says It's About That Time

Jay Electronica has to be hands down one of the most prolific rappers to have never released an album. Fans have waited almost a decade for his debut entitled Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn). So, when Jay Z joined Electronica on-stage during his NBA All-Star Weekend set and remarked to him, "Let's go put this album out," fans everywhere started buzzing about the possibility of a release date in the very near future. 

Wait. Don't try to download it just yet, though.

Jay Electronica said in a Billboard interview that if he isn't 100 percent satisfied with the end product, he won't release the project. He went on to say, "Then again, an album is a false concept anyway. An album is something that was created by corporations as a product to make money," he said. "People have been making music, doing plays, and telling stories around fires for trillions of years. I like albums but I’m not too really handcuffed to the concept of that."

He also discussed the interest that people still have in him as an artist in an interview with Complex: "It’s humbling that after all these years anybody still has any interest in what I’m doing," he says. "As far as an album, I would like to put out an album myself. Nobody in the world wants a Jay Electronica album out more than I do. I release music in my own time… things evolve… over the trajectory of your life… you can’t put a stopwatch on that."

Even Erykah Badu, with whom Electronica had a child in 2009, told the crew at Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club in 2015 that he didn't even need to do another project: "Jay don’t need to make an album. He can make one if he want to but he don’t need to do that. He’s an amazing MC. Jay is a person that comes into people’s lives and brings out the best in them. His Eternal Sunshine [project] can last us until 2029. I mean ‘cause I still haven’t heard anything as good as that."

So, whether or not we get that Jay Electronica project is anybody's guess. We can rest assured that if/when we do, it will be what he wants, the way he wants it, and when he wants us to have it. And not a moment sooner.
