Could Weed Tampons Be The Answer To All Your Cramping Woes?
Heating pads. Tylenol. Chocolate. Warm baths. Guttural screaming. How many times do you rotate through those options during an average menstrual cycle for little payoff? Though it's a little unconventional, it's high time we explored different solution to your worst period cramps: weed.
Foria, a company that sells weed-infused products like lube, says their "cannabis-infused suppositories" can ease your period symptoms naturally but won't get you blazed out of your mind so you can still go about your daily routine.
"Cannabis has a long, cross cultural history of use as a natural aide in easing symptoms associated with menstruation," according to the Foria site. "Our intention is to share the powerful medicinal properties of this plant while utilizing modern extraction techniques to standardize purity and potency, thereby ensuring a safe and accessible experience for all women."
Foria Relief tampons, which can be purchased online in packs of four for $44, are made with just three ingredients: cocoa butter, THC, and CBD (two cannabinoids). They're inserted like any other tampon, though you should put them a little farther up than plain tampons to get maximum relief for your uterus, cervix, and surrounding muscle tissue. Once in place, the cannabinoids target the nerves to block out pain and "slow down electrical signaling to muscles (i.e. your uterus) and allows them to relax, thereby reducing cramping," Foria states.
Is this just some hippie bullshit? Though Foria Relief isn't FDA-approved and hasn't been clinically tested, according to Broadly, actual weed tampon users seem to be loving them.
"I was not surprised at how well the suppository worked. What I was surprised about was the longevity," a Broadly reporter admitted in her review. "Midol will wear off after about half a work day, and during most periods I'll pop six a day. But one Foria suppository did its job well into my evening."
"I tested the Foria Relief on the first day of my period. Cramps, aches, they were all there," one reviewer wrote on the Foria website. "All I had to do was slip one of the small suppositories inside myself, lie back, and relax. I timed the medicine, and after eight minutes a soothing, relieving sensation swept over my lower region."
"It took my pain level from an 8 to a 3," another reviewer wrote, "And a couple bowls of Animal Cookies later, I was actually laughing and carrying on a normal conversation."
So far Foria products are only available in California and Colorado, but the company says it's "working hard to make Foria available wherever cannabis-infused products are available by state law." Since weed is legal in some form in about half the country, your local drugstore's ~feminine products~ aisle could be getting a serious upgrade in the near future.
