Doug Jones WINS Senate Race Thanks to Black Voters!!!
In a real nail-biter of a Senate race, Democrat Doug Jones won!!
Jones won the special election on Tuesday to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general.
Strong support for Roy S. Moore, the Republican accused of sexual misconduct, was expected in rural, mostly white parts of the state…but it wasn’t enough.
Jones led in the urban areas that include Birmingham and Montgomery, and across a band of largely Black counties. And THEY VOTED. A whopping 97% of Black women, and 92% of Black men made it happen.
As TIME reported, “Jones cannot be seated until the Alabama’s Secretary of State certifies his win. John Merrill, Alabama’s Secretary of State, told TIME the results will be certified between Dec. 26 and Jan. 3. The Senate has yet to set a date for the swearing in.”
NBA legend and Alabama-proud Charles Barkley, who’s been tirelessly campaigning for the candidate, told CNN: “This is a great night for Alabama. We’ve been stuck in a time warp a long time...Yeah, we got a bunch of rednecks and ignorant people, but we got some amazing people, and they rose up today.”
Jones took to Twitter to express his gratitude.
Of course, Trump weighed in.
Twitter is exploding with joy, making #DougJones the No. 1 trending topic.
This race goes to show how important -- and powerful -- our votes are! #AlabamaState #DougJones #BlackVotesMatter
