We can't say we didn't see it coming.

Micheal Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, pleaded guilty Friday morning to lying to the FBI about secret conversations he had with Russia last December.

Flynn has since released a statement on the issue, according to USA Today: "After over 33 years of military service to our country, including nearly five years in combat away from my family, and then my decision to continue to serve the United States, it has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months of false accusations of 'treason' and other outrageous acts," he wrote.

"Such false accusations are contrary to everything I have ever done and stood for," Flynn added. "But I recognize that the actions I acknowledged in court today were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right."

Flynn also (basically) admitted that he spoke to Russia to, um ... help his family. Yikes.

"My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country," Flynn continued. "I accept full responsibility for my actions."

The New York Times notes that lying to the FBI comes with a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

White House lawyer Ty Cobb attempted to put some distance between Flynn and the Trump administration following news of Flynn's guilty plea; you can read his statement below:

Somewhere, a Trump supporter is starting at the news, screaming, "BUT HER EMAILS THOUGH."
