This Cartoon Comparing Betsy DeVos To Ruby Bridges Proves We've Got A Long Way to Go
On Sunday, the Belleville News-Democrat published a controversial cartoon by Glenn McCoy, comparing Billionaire Betsy DeVos to Ruby Bridges, the first black child to attend an all-white school.
His cartoon clearly is a recreation of the painting "The Problem We All Live With," a Norman Rockwell creation showcasing 6-year-old Ruby Bridges walking into school with U.S. Marshals while white people screamed racial slurs at her.
McCoy thought it would be appropriate to compare DeVos to Bridges, considering DeVos was blocked from entering a public school while protestors shouted, "Shame!"
Hey, McCoy, there's a difference between protesting and committing a hate crime.
Twitter wasn't feeling McCoy's cartoon AT ALL:
Despite all the backlash, McCoy still stands by his cartoon.
In an interview with Talking Points Memo, he said, "My cartoon was about how, in this day and age, decades beyond the civil rights protests, it's sad that people are still being denied the right to speak freely or do their jobs or enter public buildings because others disagree with who they are or how they think."
He could've easily made that point without comparing DeVos to Bridges.
How are you going to compare an innocent 6-year-old trying to get an education to a 59-year-old woman who bought her way into her job? How are you going to compare the N-word to the word "conservative?" Are we missing something here?
Another Twitter user pointed out that DeVos chose to hold political office, and if she can't handle peaceful protests, maybe she should've stayed home:
McCoy apologized "if anyone was offended" by his cartoon but said his intention was to create a conversation on the increased hate surrounding our political climate.
Well, he created a conversation alright...
