Congress Just Scolded Donald Trump For Deleting Some Of His Tweets
No tweeting and deleting for you, Mr. President.
Two members of Congress warned Donald Trump in a letter that if he or a member of his staff deletes his tweets — even if they contain spelling errors — they may be breaking a federal law.
Tweets on the @POTUS and @realDonaldTrump accounts contain messages that "are likely to be presidential records and therefore must be preserved," wrote Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who serve on the House Oversight Committee.
"It has been reported, however, that President Trump has deleted tweets, and if those tweets were not archived, it could pose a violation of the Presidential Records Act," the lawmakers explained.
According to The Huffington Post, Chaffetz and Cummings are likely referring to Trump's recent issue with the word "hereby": Earlier this month, he or a staffer deleted two tweets that misspelled the word before getting it right on the third try.
To make sure that all of its tweets were archived, "the Obama administration instituted auto-archiving capabilities on its Twitter accounts," noted Chaffetz and Cummings.
Both lawmakers requested that the Trump administration clarify its current archiving policies and training procedures.
The White House did not respond to HuffPost's request for comment on the letter, which you can read in full here.
