Could You Handle Dating A Celebrity?
Dating a celebrity sounds like paradise. There's more money than you can count. The parties are more extravagant than you can imagine. The sex is hotter than the steamiest movies. Everything should be better, grander, and sexier when dating a celebrity, right?
...sort of. While there are definitely perks (getting a reservation at the trendiest restaurant in town isn't hard), dating a celebrity comes with a unique set of challenges that only certain individuals are cut out for. Think you can handle these challenges?
[NOTE: This post will refer to the celebrity you might date as male. Feel free to change the pronoun to whatever you're into.]
1. Gossip
For years, you've read celebrity gossip and tabloid fodder. But if you're dating a celeb, you may become the target of such smalltalk. And even if y'all keep your relationship a secret, you'll have to deal with the constant rumors of who he's dating, sleeping with, breaking up with, etc.
2. He may never feel like yours and yours alone
A celebrity, by definition, is a public figure. If he tries to live too secretly, his celeb-status will disintegrate. Fans feel like they know their celeb-crushes, some even to the point of crazy stalking. You have to be content with the fact that your boyfriend has more people to answer to besides you, a LOT more.
3. The publicist may feel like a 3rd wheel
When your man isn't sleeping with or talking to you, he's probably consulting his publicist. After all, if his name isn't out there, he won't be getting work. The publicist, after you and his family, is probably the most important person in his life. You have to respect this relationship. HOWEVER, if he or the publicist crosses the line, you have every right to kick his, or the publicist's, balls.
4. He may have two different personalities
Many celebrities have different personas for their public and private lives. Don't be surprised if the person he was on the Red Carpet at his latest premiere isn't the person he was sitting on the couch Sunday afternoon watching reruns of "Project Runway" with you.
5. You have to remember that he is just a person
Yes, he's a celeb, and that comes with a lot of baggage. But everyone has baggage. True love is when people accept each other, warts and all. In the end, you must fall in love with the person he really is, not just the celeb you thought he was.
