This Couple Managed To Take Down Their Student Loan Debt In Just Two Months

Couple, David and Meg Cahill

Go to college they said. You will live a life of luxury because of it they said. What "they" forgot to mention is that if you have to take out a loan for college, that luxurious life isn't coming until you're over a decade out from your graduation date.

Interest rates can be a bitch, that's the reality Chicago-based David Cahill realized a few years ago when he walked away from grad school with nearly $20,000 worth of loans staring back at him. Riddled with fear that he and his wife would never pay it off, this couple managed to save and pay off the student loan in less than two months!

We all know what you borrow is far from what you are expected to pay back. David only used $18,000 for grad school but when all was said and done, he was expected to pay back over $27,000. Yeah, he and his wife Meg weren't about to spend their lives doing that. So they decided to buckle down.

They weren't working bad jobs though, so that helped. Combined they made over $100,000 annually but living in Chicago with a mortgage, that can go fast. So they decided they'd cut down on eating out, seeing movies and stuck to the basic for 54 days. In less than two months they'd saved nearly $8,000 and put it all towards the loan. Then in April 2016 they took another $10,000 and made that last payment.

David and Meg were lucky enough to attain employment after college. Good employment that is. Some aren't so lucky, but no matter the situation, if you're willing to, as the couple says on David's blog, "Sacrifice now in order to be able to win later," then you too can be debt free before 30 like him.

Just cut back on the Starbucks, those extra trips, those new shoes you think you need that will sit in the back of your closet for at least two months. You will be amazed at how much you can save when you strip down to the basics for awhile.
