Imagine you’re driving home from work, you turn a corner, and you’re met with the horrific site of a school bus engulfed in flames. This is what happened recently when the engine of a school bus caught fire mid-route.

The Burning Bus

Witnesses reported pulling up to see D’Anthony Gilden with book bags thrown over his arms, racing to get all 30 children off the bus. Many even went on to call Gilden a hero.

A Kansas City native, Gilden was driving his daily route for Hickman Mills Elementary School when he noticed smoke coming from one of the engine's compartments. Within seconds, flames began to envelop the school bus. Thankfully, Gilden acted quickly, "I yelled to the back and told one of the older kids to open up the emergency door," he told KMBC News. "I was checking the seats going back from the fire, going towards the fire."

D'Anthony Gilden

D’Anthony remained on the bus until all 30 children were off, safe, and sound.

Thursday night, the school district honored Gilden with multiple awards:

Gilden says he never expected to experience anything like this and thinks about the incident constantly. He told KSHB, "I think about the kids and the what ifs and what could have happened”

If you have never seen a black superhero before today, ladies and gentlemen, now you have. D’Anthony Gilden is just more proof that not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Adidas caps and drive school buses.

Now, where is Marvel?
