Dave Chappelle Admits He Regrets Telling People To Give Donald Trump A Chance On SNL
Dave Chappelle wasn't a huge fan of either candidate in last year's presidential election, but he shocked pretty much everyone when he told people to trust then-President Elect Donald Trump after his shocking victory.
"I'm wishing Donald Trump luck, and I'm going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one, too," said comedy legend said at the end of his Saturday Night Live monolog last November.
At the time, a lot of people weren't pleased with Chappelle's remarks.
The alt-right was excited about it, at least.
But on Monday — 115 days into Trump's presidency — Chappelle completely walked back on his peace offering.
"I was the first guy on TV to say ‘Give Trump a chance,' " Chappelle said at a charity event in New York. "I f*cked up. Sorry."
Chappelle also said he disagreed with Trump's (doomed) travel ban, which targeted seven Muslim-majority countries, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I think that is way out of step with the way people feel in America. Am I wrong about that?" Chappelle asked the audience. "Every day you wake up and you never know what he is going to do next. He's exciting like you thought a black president would have been."
Welp, hindsight is 20/20, as they say.
