Deviled Eggs Like You've Never Seen Them Before
A staple at any potluck or appetizer plate, the deviled egg might look a little bit boring. You're just making egg salad, and that means a lot of mayo and a lot of tired looks from your guests. The ease and familiarity of deviled eggs might be their greatest power.
There are so few ingredients that they're easy and customizable. All you need are hard-boiled eggs... and that's pretty much it. Everything else is only going to add some nutrients back into to your recipe or kick it up a notch.
Introducing the avocado deviled egg! Not only is the green from the avo going to give your mixture a pop of color, but we also opted to replace the mayo with Greek Yogurt for health purposes.
Gather all your ingredients:
- six hard-boiled eggs (peeled and halved)
- one avocado
- 2.5 tablespoons of Greek Yogurt
- A lime (to squeeze for the juice)
- At least 1 clove of garlic
- Cayenne pepper
- 1 jalapeño pepper (for garnish)
- Hot sauce of your choice (for garnish)
Scoop the egg yolks into a bowl, add the avocado and yogurt, and spice it up with the garlic, lime juice, cayenne, salt and pepper, and whatever else you'd like to spice in. Add your mixture back into the egg whites, and garnish with a japaño slice and hot sauce.
It's spicy, delicious, and looks great on a serving plate!
If you want to make your devilish creations really stand out, pick up a piping bag. Usually used for decorative frosting on cakes and cupcakes, it can both jazz up any deviled egg or simplify getting the yolk mixture back into the egg white.
See the swirls of the avocado? That's what you get with a piping bag.
You have a bunch of different options for different price points:
- Disposable plastic piping bags are available in the baking section of most grocery stores. Although single use, it's easy and affordable.
- Make a homemade version with a plastic sandwich bag by simply cutting off the corner tip with scissors.
- Invest in professional cake decorating bags. They come with different kinds of tips for different styles. The pipe tip you pick is up to your own tastes, but some fillings are better suited to certain tip styles. Chunkier fillings would be best piped through a larger, rounded point, while smoother fillings look fancy when using a star tip.
No need to make a deal with the devil(ed eggs. HA!) for this appetizer. Try out what works best for you, and impress everyone with your creativity.
