Domestic Dispute Leads Chicago Woman To Force Bleach Down Boyfriend's Throat, Killing Him
When Love Was Real

It's not everyday that you hear a story about how a Chicago woman drowned her boyfriend with bleach, but this actually happened.

In a bizarre turn of events, an argument between Yasmine Elder, 24, and Darrius Ellis, 26, escalated into a physical fight. Somehow she forced the caustic substance down his throat which led to his death. Elder has been charged with 1st-degree murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

At first glance, you might be wondering how Elder could pull this off. The Chicago Tribune reported that Elder climbed on top of Ellis, used her knee to hold him down, grabbed his dreads, and poured bleach all over his face. And Ellis suffered. According to the medical examiner, he had scratches and abrasions on both cheeks, his neck and back, bruises on his head and back, and chemical burns along his esophagus and in his stomach.

Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Carlson said in a statement that Elder left Ellis in the van yelling for help because he couldn't breathe. An eyewitness called 911, but he was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital just over an hour after the attack.

Elder can pretty much forget about getting any sympathy from anybody either inside or outside the courtroom. Witnesses say that she callously laughed when told that Ellis could die because of what she did to him. Carlson says that she confessed to the crime, so it will be hard to unring that bell. The fact that Elder was already on probation for hitting her neighbor in the head with a lock gives her a history of violent behavior.

From all accounts, Ellis was a stand-up guy. He was a college graduate, a hardworking welder, and a doting father to a 5-year old boy. "He was a good kid," said his grandfather, Clarence Hebron. "Everybody loved him."

So a young Black man's life is cut short all because he was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong woman and a bottle of bleach. What is the world coming to?
