Dozens Watched A Chicago Teen Raped On Facebook Live & No One Reported It
It’s hard to say which part of this story is more disgusting:
A 15-year old girl from Chicago was sexually assaulted by “at least 5 or 6 men” on Facebook Live. What’s more, at least 40 people were watching the crime take place live, yet none of them called the police.
The victim has been identified as Deahvion Austin. She had been missing for 24 hours before her mother approached the police.
The mom had to learn her daughter’s fate in the worst way possible; it was the girl’s uncle who stumbled upon the video on Facebook. He immediately took four screen grabs for the police.
That’s how Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson knows how many people were watching – the screen grabs show that 40 people were viewing the video live, and that not a single one of them thought to report the crime.
“[The Superintendent] was visibly upset when he heard about the case and saw the pictures of the girl,” according to a police spokesperson’s statement. “He was also very dismayed when he learned that there were people watching the incident live and no one called police. The video shows her being sexually assault by at least 5 or 6 men.”
The victim, Austin, was found a few hours after the initial police report. She’s being treated in a hospital for the alleged sexual assault.
The video showing the incident was immediately removed by Facebook after police contacted the social media site.
Meanwhile, investigators suspect that most, if not all, of the suspects in the case are juveniles. Austin reportedly knew one of them, and was acquaintances with a few others. No arrests have been made as of yet.
It’s not the first time Facebook Live has been used to broadcast heinous crimes – in fact, it’s not even the first time it’s happened in Chicago. Just two months ago, four people were charged with assaulting and abusing a mentally challenged teenager while broadcasting the entire event.
