Emotional Flooding: Can it Work for You?
When Oprah did this, she wept and reunited with memories from decades past that led to lasting happiness. She was at self-help guru, motivational speaker, and best selling personal development author Tony Robbin's seminar to live her best life. The process is called emotional flooding.
Watch this video featuring lifestyle and self-help guru Tony Robbins, to gain a greater understanding of what inspired Oprah's happy tears:
Now that you've seen the video, and understand emotional flooding from personal experience, rather than a recounted experience, what are your thoughts?
Emotional flooding is opening the floodgates of your memory while in a meditative state, with the intention of releasing fond memories. The feelings that resulted or came in real time with these fond memories can be recaptured as existing in the present moment, and profoundly affect one's well being at any time.
We've all heard of the people who just can't let go of the past, and its detrimental; destructive. How often do you hear about the people who just can't let go of the good times, and instead of feeling melancholy or depressed over those moments passing, understand and embody that same joy today, as though no time had passed? This isn't delusion, but rather, it's a skill, to be able to whole-heartedly experience the joy that the average person may confine to the past, and assign to an experience. That joy is always accessible to us, and if we can selectively hone those experiences, and build upon them, we'll have a well of joy that is overflowing, with enough to share.
Think about the following questions, and journal if you are feeling inspired to go into more depth.
1. What currently occupies the bulk of your thoughts? Is it past, present or future? Is it currently negative, positive or apathetic?
2. Which experience that you recounted was most powerful? From which time in your life did this thought come from? How is today similar and different from that point in time?
3. How can you have a similar experience, or evoke similar feelings in the future? Or right now in this present moment?
4. Have you thanked the people who are featured in your emotional flooding episodes? It might be time.
