Take That, Trolls! Facebook Announces New Anti-Bullying Features
Social media can be a rough place, with anger, cruelty and bullying lurking right around every corner. But Facebook is doing it’s part to fight back with their newly expanded Safety Center and Bullying Prevention Hub.
“People come to Facebook to share some of their most important moments in life,” says the company in a blog post. “We’ve built the Safety Center to help people control their experience on our platform and feel safe being themselves.”
The Safety Center has been around for a long while, but the system was only lightly used and difficult to manage. Now, Facebook has made the Center available in 50 different languages and provides video tutorials on how to use different features, including controlling who can see what you post, as well as managing what you yourself see.
The Bullying Prevention Hub has been around for years as well, and has received the same much-needed language overhaul. They’ve also brought on more than 50 new partners to support the platform's main sponsor, The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
Facebook’s stand against bullying isn’t limited to the internet. “When we first launched the Bullying Prevention Hub, our goal was to bridge the gap between offline and online," a spokesperson said in an interview. "For example, if a student experiences bullying, they can report it to us and we’ll take [that post] down. We also offer tools to control who you interact with or reach out [to] for help. But if someone is being bullied, it’s probably not just a problem on Facebook, and we wanted to help solve the broader problem, too."
So if you’re ever uncomfortable on the world’s biggest social media platform, you’ve finally got all the tools you need to tailor your experience. Kudos to FB!
