A little bit of foresight, and this whole mess could have been avoided:

Hillary Duff was forced to apologize on Twitter for her Halloween costume. Which, really, she should have known would cause a stir.

Duff made her first public appearance with new boyfriend Jason Walsh Friday and, as far as first impressions go, they’d probably like a re-do on this one.

The two attended the annual Casamigos Halloween party in LA Friday night, Duff dressed as a pilgrim, and Walsh as a headdress-wearing Native American. The latter of which has become a major no-no in recent years, especially in the midst of the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy.

Duff apologized soon after the party on Twitter: “I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my [heart emoji] sorry."

Boyfriend Walsh also made a statement on Instagram, saying, “I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America. In hindsight I would not have made that decision. I apologize to anyone I may have offended.”

These two aren’t the only celebrities to recently backtrack on their Native American costume choices – Chris Hemsworth also has apologized recently for wearing a similar costume, claiming he was ‘stupidly unaware’ of the insensitivity of his choice.
