BREAKING: Missing Newborn Finally Found Safe After Mom's Murder--Suspect Arrested
This story has gripped the nation, and especially residents of Houston, TX., after the news broke recently that a mom was murdered in her apartment, and her six-week-old daughter was kidnapped. Moms of new babies in the area were all, understandably, terrified.
But now, the baby has been found safe and a suspect has been taken into custody. Houston Police Department did not release any details on how they found the infant or the name of the person the arrested in connection with the case, but it’s a relief on both counts.
Here’s what happened: An unnamed family member found Carolina Flores, 33, dead in her residence from multiple stab wounds. At the time, the baby Shamali Flores, 6 weeks, was nowhere to be found, police said.
Officials at first thought Shamali was with her father, Marcos Mariano Palacios. But he was found, cleared, and the search continued.
A $5,000 reward was quickly put up for info on Shamali’s whereabouts and Carolina’s murder. Houston Police chief Art Acevedo said during a press conference on Wednesday, “The individual who abducted Shamali may be a woman who has or will present the child as their own, and may even indicate the child was recently born.”
Acevedo acknowledged a “mistrust” from the immigrant community toward police and emphasized tips can be submitted anonymously. “We want to make sure that people understand that our one focus ... our only goal is to bring justice to this family and that baby back to where she belongs,” he said. “We’re not interested in anybody’s immigration status.”
Here's a timeline of the crime, as news broke.
She was found the morning after the press conference. No one knows yet if it was an anonymous tip that led to Shamali’s recovery and the suspect’s arrest, but the community is relieved that the baby is home in time for her first Christmas.
