How Low Can You Go? Trump's Approval Rating Sets A New Record
With every 140-character tweet, Donald Trump is fast on his way to becoming the most unpopular president that this country, and quite possibly this world, has ever seen. But just how bad is it? That depends on who you ask.
A May 2017 Quinnipiac University survey found that only 36 percent of voters give him the thumbs up while 58 percent disapprove wholeheartedly. The April 19 poll was slightly better with a 40 percent approval and 56 percent disapproval.
What's very telling is that the non-degreed White voters who were largely responsible for putting him in office are now jumping ship. In one month, Trump's approval rating with this group dropped from 57 to 47 percent.
The survey also revealed that 61 percent of voters think Trump is a liar, 59 percent say that he doesn't care about everyday Americans, and 66 percent question his ability to make sound decisions. No matter how you spin it, this is not a good look.
"There is no way to spin or sugarcoat these sagging numbers," said assistant director of the survey, Tim Malloy. "The erosion of White men, White voters without college degrees and independent voters, the declaration by voters that President Donald Trump's first 100 days were mainly a failure and deepening concerns about Trump's honesty, intelligence and levelheadedness are red flags that the administration simply cannot brush away."
There are still some die hard supporters who defend Trump's early days in office even in the face of disappointment and blatant failures. In spite of vile, racist, discriminatory, and misogynistic rhetoric uttered during his campaign, the same people who were targets of his insults voted for him and still sing his praises. But even a May 24 Fox News poll shows that even more people are getting off the Trump train with a 5 percent drop since April.
Ultimately, support for Trump since he took office has been a mixed bag but certainly not in favor of him and his administration. If this downward trend continues, then the truth will become nearly impossible to ignore. Sooner or later the fallout from his antics will darken everybody's doorstep. And when it does, no one will be able to call what he has done "fake news."
