It Turns Out Humpback Whales Are the Heroes of the Sea

Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes it's a classmate standing up to your bully or a firefighter pulling someone out of a burning building. Other times it's not letting someone take their keys and drive home drunk or a decorated war hero like the famous Audie Murphy, not only a hero for his bravery on the battlefield but for his legacy bringing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder into the public arena during the 1960s and early 1970'.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, but the biggest of all are Humpback Whales. Recently, research and videos have been surfacing describing heroics by these great kings of the sea. Check out this video:

That's right. Humpback whales have been recorded rescuing smaller marine life from the clutches of Orcas over 100 times. If Free Willy taught you anything it's that Orcas, also known as Killer Whales, are exceptionally smart and interesting creatures. Their intelligence makes them feared and respected even by Great White Sharks.

But with all that intelligence and power leads to an unfortunate side effect: orcas are jerks. Like, seriously. Orcas have been known to torture their victims, killing other animals just for the sake of it. Dragging seals out into deep water and flipping them high into the air. If you don't believe me just watch this video.

The only real conclusions that scientists have been able to make is that Orcas are bad asses and they know it. It's like the song "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". He goes around starting crap and everyone is scared of him, but then he talks to the wife of a meaner guy and gets his face smashed in.

Maybe Humpbacks are taking revenge for times that Orcas have singled out their calves out of the pack to feed on? After all, these majestic creatures are known to remember people or places for many many years. Maybe their sorrow and hatred of Orcas has long memory as well.

Another theory that I have is Humpbacks are being financed by PETA. Think about it, what better way to prevent animal cruelty from Orcas than by hiring an even bigger whale to protect the beloved dogs of the sea. Either way, it's amazing to watch.
