A Sanford, Florida man was arrested Monday in connection with a shooting that left his ex-girlfriend and her son dead and four others injured, including the woman's father and other son.

"I can't stress enough that this scene is one of the worst that our officers and investigators have ever responded to," Sanford spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said. "It's horrific."

Police told Click Orlando that authorities had been called to a local gas station around 3:20 a.m. Monday to settle a dispute between Allen D. Cashe, 31, and Latina Herring, 35. They were reportedly arguing over a set of house keys.

After Cashe and his car were searched for weapons and the couple insisted their argument wasn't physical, officers separated them and left the scene.

About 15 minutes later, police received a 911 call from a bystander who claimed to have witnessed a man beating a woman while walking down a street. While they were searching for the victim, police got another 911 call about a man who had a gun.

After determining that both of the calls were about Cashe and Herring, police pulled up to their residence, where they found the former couple arguing about the keys again.

Cashe was searched for a second time, and police drove away without arresting either of them after Herring handed them a big of Cashe's belongings, including a gun.

Cashe eventually left the scene, too — but about three hours later, he returned with an AK-47.

Cashe fatally shot Herring and her 8-year-old son, Branden Christian Jr., and critically wounded Herring's 7-year-old son, Brendon Christian, and Herring's 56-year-old father, Bertis Herring Jr.

"Excessive amount of blood everywhere," said Arlene Bush, a neighbor who heard the gunshots. "I can't even believe (the grandfather) made it out of the house as bad as he was."

Cashe has faced several violent domestic abuse charges in the past, as Click Orlando noted.

After Cashe gunned down Herring and her family, he hopped in his car and drove a ways before shooting Lazaro Paredesquelite, 43, and Rakeya Jackson, 18, who were standing at a bus stop. Both are in stable condition, police said.

Dominique Smith, who attends high school with Jackson and was waiting at the same bus stop when the shooting happened, said Cashe told them, "I'm sorry, but y'all are gonna die," before firing 10 rounds.

Cashe was later taken into custody, and has since been charged with first degree homicide, four counts of attempted first degree premeditated homicide, one count of second degree attempted homicide, one count of felon with a firearm, and one count of violation of parole - felon with a firearm.

After a brief appearance in court Tuesday, a judge appointed Cashe a public defender and sent him back to jail on no bond, according to WFTV 9.
