Jenna Elfman's Reddit AMA Was All About The Evils Of Scientology
I am not one hundred percent sure who actually watches ABC's newest show Imaginary Mary. Starring Jenna Elfman and Rachel Dratch, the show is about a woman who is about to move in with her boyfriend's family and receives parenting advice from her former childhood imaginary friend, Mary.
Not only did A LOT of people okay that concept, but also thought that it was heavily promotable. You can tell from the first paragraph of this article that the show is a train wreck waiting to happen.
Outside of the horrendous premise, the shows first indication that it would likely only last one season was when its star Jenna Elfman agreed to do a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) to promote the show. Usually these AMAs are about the various stars' films, shows, and dating life. For Elfman, however, her AMA had almost nothing to do with Imaginary Mary and everything to do with her religious beliefs.
Elfman is a very proud Scientologist. The religion was founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and has evolved into one of the most powerful religious institutions in the country. Preying mostly off of the Hollywood elite, Scientology is about ridding oneself of "Body thetans" which cause negative emotions. To do this, practices have to give a large amount of money, go through rigorous tests, and anything else the "church" wants.
Still a bit of a mystery, Scientology became the subject of Elfman's AMA, but not in a polite way. Users asked Elfman questions like, "When you are on vacation do you visit volcanoes or are you too scared to be close to the thetans?" and "Do you feel any empathy towards the many people’s lives and families that have been destroyed by Scientology?" "Are you aware of the emotional, psychical and mental abuse that your cult inflicts on people?"
As you can see, these questions were very direct but also legitimate. While Elfman probably will not see any of these questions, one thing is clear: no one on Reddit ever plans to watch Imaginary Mary and everyone is curious about the mysterious cult of Scientology. Why would her publicist ever sign her up for this?
