'Just Kill Me': United Airlines Passenger's Mouth Covered In Blood After Being Dragged Off Plane
A disturbing new video shows the aftermath of a viral encounter between Chicago Police and a man who allegedly refused to give up a seat on an overbooked United Airlines flight from Chicago to Louisville Sunday.
As Gizmodo reported, the man can be seen clutching a curtain at the rear of the plane, muttering "I have to go home" and "just kill me" repeatedly as blood drips from his mouth.
The man was eventually taken to a local Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to Audra Bridges, another United passenger who posted a video of the incident on Facebook, the man had been dragged through the aircraft by security officials after allegedly refusing to give up his seat to a United employee on standby.
On Monday afternoon, the Chicago Department of Aviation announced one of the officers involved had been placed on leave, the Associated Press reported.
Passengers on United flight 3411 were notified that the flight was overbooked before they boarded the plane Sunday evening. Bridges told the Courier-Journal that United initially offered $400 and one night in a hotel to anyone who volunteered to take a different flight on Monday afternoon.
After passengers were allowed to board the plane, they were told that four people needed to relinquish their seats to United employees on standby, and that the flight wouldn't depart until the employees had seats.
There were no volunteers even after United upped its offer to $800, so a manager told passengers that a computer was going to randomly select four of them to to be kicked off the flight.
After one couple was selected to leave the plane, the man in the video was also told to exit the aircraft. When he allegedly refused and told the manager he was calling his lawyer, he was was forcibly removed from his seat by a security official and dragged through the aircraft.
In a statement, the Chicago Police said officials were attempting to carry the man off the flight "when he fell."
"His head subsequently struck an armrest causing injuries to his face," the statement reads.
One woman posted a picture of a bloody armrest on the flight, saying her husband "had to deboard because of the blood."
The man was a doctor who needed to see patients Monday morning, according to Bridges.
"Everyone was shocked and appalled," Bridges told the Courier-Journal. "There were several children on the flight as well that were very upset."
United CEO Oscar Munoz has since released a statement about the incident, saying it was "an upsetting event to all of us here at United."
"I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers," Munoz said. "Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation."
