Good Karma: DJ Sparkles Saved From Car Wreck By Jaws Of Life She Helped Raise Money For

Sonja Brunner is happy to be alive

Imagine the shock and terror of being in a horrible car crash, and finding yourself trapped in the hulking wreck of your own vehicle. You’re pinned by tons of razor-sharp steel, jagged shards of glass, and the smoke of smoldering tires. You cannot get out. You don’t know if you’ll survive.

“Is this it? Is the end of my life?” That’s what Sonja Brunner, AKA DJ Sparkles, thought when a car came flying over the median from the opposite direction and slammed head-on into she and her friend/passenger, Gabby.

Rescue teams made it quickly to the scene. Gabby was freed, and so was the driver who caused the accident, Todd Russo (who was charged with felony driving under the influence). But Sonja was trapped.

Felton Fire Protection District personnel acted fast. “This rescue required the use of our cordless jaws of life,” they wrote on Facebook, “which was purchased with funds generated by our pancake breakfast. We thank our community for their support so that we may have the equipment necessary for these unfortunate events.”

Well, guess who was a big part of that pancake breakfast fundraiser? Yep, it was DJ Sparkles!

She’s an active member of the community and helps out all kinds of charitable causes, but did she ever dream that money she helped raise would ultimately lead the purchase of the jaws of life that would save hers? She didn’t, but she’s grateful.

When Sonja found out how fate worked in her favor, “It gave me goosebumps,” she told NBCBayArea.com.

Sonja was badly injured with multiple fractures, but thanks to her getting out of the wreck quickly and safely, she’s now on the road to recovery and will continue giving to her community.

Way to go, DJ Sparkles!
