How To Utilize Space In A Studio Apartment (Or a Small Room)
Most of us have to deal with small spaces at some point in our lives, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. It all seems so simple at first, right? Then a few months later, you feel trapped within such a small space and everything seems so cluttered. However, that's a sacrifice some of us have to make. Choosing a smaller space can end up saving you thousands of dollars each year. Regardless of how big your space is, all of us deserve to feel comfortable in our sanctuary, which is why we're here to help you utilize the space in your single apartment or small room!
1. Keep it minimalistic. (We're talking to you, hoarders!)
When dealing with a small space, it's hard to avoid clutter. We get it. Papers build up, trinkets add up, and your mug collection isn't getting any smaller. Think about what you need first before mindlessly throwing things out. Do you really need a huge dining table when you live alone? Do you really need a king size bed? Do you need to have your entire book collection on display? These are important things to keep in mind. Use your closet / additional storage to keep the things you don't regularly use out of the way.
2. Get a room separator.
The one downside of studio apartments...everything has to be in one room. However, most studio apartments have enough room for you to add a room separator. This will not only make your space look more full, but it will also add character to the place. Curtains, bookshelves, sliding doors...they all work!
3. Don't let one thing dictate the room arrangement.
Usually this ends up being the TV. We think to ourselves, "Oh, well if I'm putting the TV against the wall, all of the chairs / beds / couches need to be directly facing it." False. You can always rearrange things when you have a few people over watching a movie, but it's not like you're having a Orange is the New Black watching party everyday, right?
4. Keep things white and bright, with a few statement pieces.
This will make the space appear bigger than it actually is, and who wouldn't want that? Adding a few colorful statement pieces will add character to your apartment and add a nice level of juxtaposition to the space. Count us in!
5. Storage, storage, storage.
You know how earlier we said you should keep it minimalistic? Well, to properly do this, you're going to need to know how to store things correctly. It's all about hacking the system. Yes, obviously you should utilize your closet space, but what else can you utilize? Keep boxes under your bed or couch. DIY additional shelving on your walls. Just think outside of the box!
