23-Year-Old Copycats '13 Reasons Why' Suicide & Show Critics Are Already Pointing Fingers
This is exactly what the critics were worried about.
A 23-year-old just committed suicide in the exact manner depicted on Netflix’s controversial show 13 Reasons Why.
The entire plot of the TV series is a collection of recorded tapes left behind by a girl who’s recently killed herself. Each tape is addressed to a specific person and details a reason why she made the decision to end her life, as well as the recipient’s role in that reason.
Netflix has come under fire for the show, as many critics have pointed out that the series depicts suicide in an unhealthy, justified way, and possibly even may make those at risk feel more comfortable in taking their lives. In response, Netflix added several warning messages before episodes and even linked a website where people at risk can get help.
But that doesn’t seem to have helped here.
The man in question was Peruvian, and while he doesn’t actually reference the show by name, the similarities to 13 Reasons Why are obvious. After jumping from his balcony screaming, “I can’t stand a heartbreak,” he left two suicide notes behind, one of contains a list of people he blames for his decision -- and each of them was left a recording on his computer.
Netflix hasn’t commented on the incident as of yet, but you’d better believe the show’s critics are going to become even more fervent after this tragedy.
