'Mommy Dead and Dearest': Dad Understands Why His Daughter Killed Abusive Mother
The father of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the 25-year-old woman serving 10 years in prison for murdering her mother, says he will always be there for his daughter and ultimately understands why she did what she did.
The controversial story of the broken family is the subject of an upcoming HBO documentary, Mommy Dead and Dearest, airing on May 15.
“Yeah, it’s wrong, and there were other options that Gypsy had — which she tried some of those avenues and they didn’t work out,” says Gypsy's father, Rod Blanchard. “Bad as it sounds, she asked for what she got.”
Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed to death in Missouri in June 2015 after concerned friends saw concerning posts on Gypsy's Facebook account including “the Bitch is dead.”
When police discovered Dee Dee's dead body, they couldn't help but notice that Gypsy was missing as well. When the questioned neighbors, they told police that she suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy and needed a wheelchair.
However, when authorities found Gypsy, they discovered she was perfectly healthy.
Doctors eventually came to the conclusion that Gypsy was the victim of Munchausen by proxy, in which a parent exaggerates or lies about their child's illness for attention.
Not only did Dee Dee force her daughter to shave her head and force her to take unnecessary medications for the side effects, but she also hid Gypsy from her father. But now, he's willing to do anything he can to make her feel loved again.
“We still are learning [of new things] and amazed at some of the things that went on,” Rod tells PEOPLE. “She’ll always have a home here. We’ll put her on the right path.”
