People Are Going Crazy Because The New Power Rangers Movies Features A Gay Ranger
I am so over all of this controversy about "gay scenes" in major movies. Disney's live action remake of "Beauty and the Beast" was released earlier in March, and it received a ridiculous amount of criticism because the director, actor, and writers conceived "Le Fou," Gaston's smarmy sidekick as homosexual. The film was pulled from theaters in Alabama due to its "un-Christian" message. As someone who saw the film, there was a split second of behavior that could be interpreted as homosexual. Please, stop freaking out over quite literally nothing.
Not even a week later, these same conservative groups were outraged that the new Power Rangers featured a gay ranger. What? How could a ranger be gay? Idk. How could you not include a major portion of America's consumerist population? I say it is about damn time.
While the scene is not over the top, it is a dramatic step forward for the representation of the LGBTQ community in blockbuster films. Becky G plays the yellow ranger, and, about half way through the film, she is speaking with one of her fellow crime fighters about her personal problems. "Girlfriend problems?" he says. She neither confirms nor denies but heavily implies that yes, she is having girlfriend problems. As a teenager, this character is not out of the closet to her family and is probably figuring out her sexuality. Regardless, it is fucking bad-ass to have a queer Power Ranger.
"Love your neighbors as you would love yourself." That is the Jesus' golden rule, so why are we not living by it? Accept others who are not like you and be proud to know them. There is no reason to hate on someone just because they have a different sexual orientation than you. As far as I am concerned, the conservative anti-gay groups that have become so obsessed with films and their portrayal of popular characters as gay can get over it. Please, just stop.
The Power Rangers movie is crushing the box office, and, to the conservative group's despair, I am one hundred percent sure that both Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers will hold the number one and number two spots at the box office for the next few weeks. There is no stopping progressive thinking.
