Pigeon Becomes Instagram Favorite After It Invades An NYC Apartment To Lay Eggs In A Pasta Strainer
Did we somehow miss the update when Airbnb announced it was allowing NYC pigeons to use their network? Imagine coming home one day to find that a pigeon decided to move in. In addition, she has a few eggs for you to babysit as well.
Well, that's the story for Genevieve Roman, a New York City woman who came home to a mother pigeon that had decided to lay eggs in her kitchen inside of her red pasta strainer. As the story goes, Roman returned home after being gone for a few months and found that a pigeon had decided to move in.
The pigeon invasion didn't startle 33-year-old immigration lawyer much as she decided to let the bird stay for a while, at least until the little birdies hatch. According to Roman, "She is a pretty nice roommate and doesn't get on my nerves such as every roommate I've had."
Genevieve says that the mother pigeon flies away sometimes but always returns to guard her eggs. The two unlikely roomies have become friends in a way, so much so that Roman gave the expecting mother a name, Adelaide, AND an instagram page.
Adelaide is now an instagram sensation, totally in part to her very proud, and very human roommate. The instant fame hasn't quite gone to the squatting pigeon's head just yet. Apparently, Adelaide is a pretty respectful pigeon. Roman says that she doesn't leave poop everywhere and isn't much of a nuisance. "She's been very low impact so far, she doesn't wander around my apartment pooping -- there's no bird poop everywhere. She just sits on the eggs."
Animal experts say that pigeons don't pose much of a threat to humans. Although they may carry insects like fleas and parasites and their poo may contain fungus.
This pigeon invasion story's ending is definitely a warm one. It is a true tale of humanity and one of the more refreshing stories dealing with humans and wildlife. After hearing of so many instances where man has interfered in the life of animals and caused them harm. Nature holds many unique treasures and should be respected just like humans expect to be respected.
Here's to a long relationship between Roman, Adelaide and the new baby pigeons.
