Outrage! Woman Allegedly Beaten & Arrested By Cops While Sleeping Outside Texas ER
2017 was filled with the discussion of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and riddled with football players kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality in America. There was no sweeping our dirt under the rug, America -- it followed us straight into 2018 -- as most unresolved issues tend to do.
On New Years Eve, according to various social media posts, a young black woman by the name of Leah allegedly was brutally beaten by a white Harker Heights police officer.
According to her attorney Lee Merritt, Leah left a New Years Eve party a little past midnight with her boyfriend. His eye was injured at the party, so the pair went to a local ER to have it checked. Leah stayed inside the car, in the passenger seat, while her boyfriend went inside.
Here are the facts we know:
- Leah had been drinking.
- Leah was asleep in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time the incident occured.
- Leah doesn't have a license and does not drive.
According to Merrit'ts post, Leah allegedly woke up to a white male officer dragging her from the vehicle and accusing her of driving under the influence. She was beaten, arrested, and taken to jail where she was further assaulted by the officer.
Leah went on to identify the officer as Officer Woods and says she tried to explain to the Heights officer that, "she was not driving, she doesn’t know how to drive, this was not her car."
Leah was not charged with a DUI, instead, according to Merritt, she was mis-charged with public intoxication in a "bizarre attempt to justify her unlawful arrest."
On the Killeen Police Department Facebook page, a statement was posted late Friday: “The Killeen Police Department and Harker Heights Police Department are aware of the allegation surrounding the arrest of a woman named Leah referenced in social media posts. The situation is currently being investigated. The facts surrounding the arrest are under review.”
This woman and so many other black men and women deserve justice for the crimes that have been committed against them. This officer should be fired and prosecuted. No excuses. #BlackLivesMatter #ItsTooMuch
