Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke made headlines for changing his mind after agreeing to take the assistant secretary position at the Department of Homeland Security, but around the same time some other news broke involving the proud Trump supporter. According to Rolling Out, a former inmate who claimed she was raped repeatedly by a guard while pregnant at Sheriff Clarke's Milwaukee County Jail won her case and was awarded $6.7 million by a jury.

The woman (who was 19 at the time) said that she was raped at least 5 times in 2013 by a correctional officer named Xavier Thicklen. "He used his keys, his power, his authority to get in these places and rape me," she said. She was also shackled to her bed during childbirth, but according to the Washington Post, that did not factor into the money that she won in court.

Officer Thicklen resigned in 2013 shortly after the allegations. He was facing five counts of second-degree sexual assault with each count worth 25 years in prison, but those charges were dropped as a part of a plea deal. By pleading no contest to one felony count of misconduct in public office, Thicklen (who still denies the assault) only served three days in jail and paid a $200 fine.

This is not the only bad thing that has happened at that Milwaukee County jails under Clarke's supervision. A mentally ill inmate died of dehydration after being refused water for a week, a woman claimed that her unborn baby died because of neglect from the guards, and another man said that he was illegally detained and harassed by Clarke because he was clowning his Cowboys jersey on a flight.

It's great that the victim won such a large sum of money in this case, but it's a little bittersweet because the officer is still free and Sheriff Clarke is still out there tweeting about Blue Lives Matter and black-on-black crime while wearing Trump dad hats. It's also great that he won't be working with the DHS, but we wouldn't be surprised if he is offered some other high-ranking job that he isn't qualified for.
