President Of Morehouse College Fired After Calling Trump's Actions Towards HBCUs 'Troubling'
The (former) President of Morehouse is suddenly out of a job, and some are blaming the situation on a take-down letter he penned about President Trump.
John Silvanus Wilson was scheduled to leave the HBCU’s top office three months from now, anyway. So why exactly the decision was made to cut him earlier?
Some point to a whole host of issues that’d come up during his tenure. While Morehouse is perhaps the best funded HBCU in the country, in recent years they’ve seen a decline in both attendance and resources. This was a trend that Wilson, in his three-plus year tenure, could not reverse.
But you can't ignore that the timing of this move coincides with his recent meeting with President Trump, along with dozens of other representatives from HBCUs.
Following that meeting, Wilson wrote an open letter to the Morehouse community. In it, he expressed thinly veiled doubts about the Donald’s plan. “…since President Trump pledged to ‘do more for HBCUs than any other president has done before,’ we could have reasonably expected him to get started by announcing at least an additional $500 million to HBCUs…this year!”
Instead of approving that funding or enacting a number of other expected measures, Wilson found Trump’s actions underwhelming, saying, “...the key change is a symbolic shift of the White House HBCU Initiative from the Department of Education to the White House. It is not possible to measure the impact of this gesture anytime soon, if ever.”
"In general, the meetings were a troubling beginning to what must be a productive relationship."
Basically, he’s saying that Trump didn’t do shit. And less than a week later, he was out of a job.
The school has not released a statement nor given an explanation for the sudden ouster, but most think the timing of that letter is to coincidental to ignore. In the meantime, William Taggart has been named the acting President.
