See The Brilliant Super Bowl Commercials That Dared To Take On Trump
Most advertisements steer clear of politics. It’s usually seen as a mistake to discuss divisive subjects, because you’re definitely going to upset some people.
But these aren’t normal times.
For this year’s Super Bowl – annually the most watched television program in America -- several companies decided to go all-in and openly criticize President Trump.
Now, no one literally held up a middle finger and said, “F**k Trump,” but the message was still clear.
Coke aired this minute-long spot with “America The Beautiful” playing in the background, sung in alternating languages, all while showing people from different races and backgrounds.
Airbnb also got in on the action, flashing overlaid faces of diverse people while promoting the message “We Accept.” The company, which has faced its own fair share of criticism over racism, also pledged to donate $4 million dollars to the International Rescue Committee.
A hair product company called A 10 gave zero f**ks about subtlety and hilarious proclaimed, “America, we’re in for at least four years of awful hair.”
Budweiser likely moved a few souls with their spot. America’s most popular beer company (that’s now owned by a Belgian corporation) ran a commercial that celebrated their founder’s story as an immigrant who faced overwhelming bias in his own day.
But perhaps the most powerful ad was from 84 Lumber, a building construction company most have never heard of. It showed a Hispanic mother and daughter ostensibly crossing the border illegally, followed by the tagline, “The will to succeed is always welcome here.” And as controversial as that is, the original was even more powerful (embedded below), so much so that Fox wouldn’t let them air the first cut. Instead, 84 Lumber directed viewers to watch the full version on their website -- which promptly crashed from overwhelming traffic.
