Sweet Delights: Tasty Desserts That Are Actually Good for You!
Life is TOO SHORT to contemplate going through it the rest of your life without eating sweets. The problem is finding a way to enjoy dessert without compromising your waistline in the process. (‘Cause you know you’ve got to make sure your clothes still fit just right!)
It took a bit of research—and some taste-testing---but we found a few treats that are just as delicious as they are good for you. Yes, you can have the best of both worlds!
1. Fruit ice
This picture alone looks good enough to eat! Fruit ice is basically just what it sounds like. It’s fruit and ice (with maybe a dab of juice and some honey) that’s been blended together. Think of it as being a smoothie minus any dairy in it. It’s a delicious dessert that’s good for you because the fresh fruit will give you the vitamins you need and the ice will help to keep you hydrated. 2. Berry trifle
If cake is your weakness, how about making a berry trifle? Since you’ll be using angel food cake, you won’t be consuming a ton of calories. Cream cheese, fresh fruit and about a cup of sugar are what will accompany it. This is the perfect kind of dessert for your kids or when you’re entertaining guests. As far as nutrients go, strawberries have plenty of antioxidants, blueberries contain potassium and fiber, raspberries have cancer-fighting properties and blackberries are rich in bioflavonoids and low and sodium. 3. Greek yogurt popsicles
Ever heard that Greek yogurt will help you to lose weight? It’s true. Many studies indicate that it’s an effective way to keep your tummy fat under control. Greek yogurt also contains lots of protein, Vitamin B12, potassium and calcium. In popsicle form, they’re pretty easy to make too. Click here for one of our favorite recipes.
4. Homemade sorbet
If you’ve always wondered about the difference between ice cream, sherbet and sorbet, here’s the deal. Ice cream and sherbets contain dairy while sorbets do not. Sorbets are similar to fruit ice in many ways; the consistency is just different. It’s like eating fresh fruit sherbet without the milk or cream. Perfect for vegans. 5. Cupcake bites
We’re not gonna sit here and try to convince you that cupcakes are healthy. But remember that oftentimes desserts are not the best because we exercise a lack of portion control. That’s why these made the list. If you bake mini-ones, you can still get your sugar fix without all of the sugar and calories. Yeah, we have a recipe for this too (click here).
6. Homemade dark chocolate dip
The perfect dessert is fresh fruit dipped in dark chocolate. Fruit has plenty of vitamins. Dark chocolate? It’s packed with antioxidants; contains fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium and copper; lowers blood pressure and (get this) protects your skin from the sun. Why not make your own homemade dip today?
