The Family Pit Bull Tragically Ripped The Face Off Of This 5-Year-Old Boy

This story is any parent's nightmare.

A 5-year-old Brooklyn boy is in critical condition after being brutally attacked by his family's pet pit bull. Little Jeremiah Rivera was with his two younger siblings when one of the family's two pit bulls attacked. The dog ripped much of the flesh from the boys forehead and cheek, along with causing neck lacerations.

The Riveras got the dogs about 2 months before the incident, and they reportedly kept the dogs in a cage at all time except for walks. "The dogs are usually so friendly, and great with the kids," said the Mohammed Wilson, the boy's uncle. A neighbor told a reporter that she often saw father Joel Rivera walking in the neighborhood with his kids, noting that he seemed like a loving father.

The Wilson family is raising funds for Jeremiah's reconstructive surgeries.

This type of story brings up the age old argument about whether ownership of pit bulls or other potentially dangerous breeds is a good idea, especially with small children around. While some people advocate for pit bulls, discouraging "breed discrimination," others believe that these dogs do not make appropriate pets.

In 2016 a New Haven woman died after being attacked by two pit bulls who belonged to her friend. The dogs attacked both the woman and their owner without provocation.

And then there was this 4-year-old Michigan girl who was killed by a doberman mix puppy last year.

Our prayers go out to little Jeremiah and his family. What do you think: should people keep pit bulls as pets?
