It’s no secret that today, women face a long list of difficulties in society. Discrimination comes in many forms and happens in all kinds of places. Between the wage gap, catcalling, and terrible rape culture, being a woman is not easy. The recent surge in action towards equality and justice for women is calling us all to step up. It’s time to stand together, now more than ever. No one can go through suffering alone, and if we all pledge to uphold and protect each other, then we won’t have to.
Growing through the strength and healing from struggles is a long battle with the best kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Every time someone tries to steal our shine, we turn that negative energy in something positive and end up shining that much brighter. Part of this process has to include opening up about our experiences and emotions to those who truly understand – other women. Without this crucial component, our bottled up feelings will ruin our mental health and keep us from reaching our full potential.
Benefiting from quality time with other ladies is scientific as well. The secret is oxytocin, the hormone released during childbirth and orgasm to create bonds with our babies and partners. It’s also released when we create special memories with people who we’re close with. Oxytocin builds trust, increases the amount of happy thoughts we have, and lets us love with all we’ve got.
Support comes in many forms and it takes time to figure out which works best for us individually. For some, it’s as simple as calling every once in awhile just to check in and see how you’re doing. Others need signs of physical support, like helping out around the house or finishing up an errand. If you really want to go above and beyond, take a road trip with a group of gals to somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit. You’ll get away, relax, and experience moments that will forever live with you to remind you of your sisters. Whichever way you choose to stand by your fellow women, you’ll make a difference for everyone – yourself included.
