The New Year's Resolution That You Can Start Any Day Of The Year
We're already well into to the New Year, which means most of you, "New Year's Resolution—ers" are probably gritting your teeth and dipping pretty far into your willpower reserve.
If this is you, you're not alone. According to a recent study conducted by the Statistic Brain Research Institute, less than 10% of people felt as though they achieved their resolutions each year. Of those that set resolutions, only 58% of people made it past the first month.
Keeping that in mind, about 32% of people surveyed said their New Year's Resolution was weight-related.
This third point is very important.
As a personal trainer, I often have clients say the reason they want to begin a fitness program is because they don't like a specific part of their body.
I'm really unhappy with the way my hips look.
Essentially, you can interject any body part into the sentence above.
This idea of "unhappiness" is a shaky foundation for starting a health overhaul. And the reason I say this is because this foundation is lacking one very important thing—self love.
Instead of being unhappy about your body, change your way of thinking:
I love my body, and I'd like to start a fitness program in an effort to respect myself and because I want to be healthier.
The human body is an amazing thing, and many of us go through life without realizing how special we are. I read somewhere that no matter what we do to our bodies—no matter what we eat, drink, or think of it—we are designed to live, and our body always fights to survive. Your body wants to be healthy, and once you realize this, then you'll truly be ready to take on any fitness or health-related challenge that stands in your way.
Life Coach Nitika Chopra offered some great ways to start a self-love routine in an article for MindBodyGreen. Some proven tips include: practicing gratitude, cleaning out your closet (figuratively, and literally), and participating in activities that make you truly happy.
Creating a self-love routine is always a great starting point for any weight-related resolution, and the best part is that you can start this at any point during the year. Days, months, and years are a relative distinction of time made by man—go out and make a new start right now.
