The Surprising Way to Fight Depression....
Traditional thought says that the root of depression is neurological, brought on by chemical imbalances in the brain, and possibly exacerbated by problematic life circumstances. If depression were purely neurological, antidepressants should surely work for everyone, but oftentimes, the cloudy, dark feelings continue. NYC-based holistic women's health psychiatrist, Kelly Brogan, MD, has pioneered this research and discusses it in her book "A Mind of Your Own."
Dr. Brogan asserts that depression is merely a symptom of inflammation, and it's most effectively treatable when the inflammation is directly addressed.
Here are her tips for fighting your gut inflammation and in turn, fighting your depression:
1. Do not consume dairy, gluten or sugar
Even if you don't have a bonafide allergy to wheat, or ever feel a stomach ache after a cup of milk, staying away could relieve gut inflammation, diminish belly fat, and have you on your way to happiness.
2. Eat naturally fatty foods
While a donut may be off limits, that doesn't mean you can't reap the benefits of luscious avocados, crunchy cashews, almonds, or a few savored pieces of dark chocolate.
3. Increase intake of Probiotics and fermented foods
Staples like fermented cabbage or pickles can boost gut health, reducing inflammation.
4. Meditate often
Meditating for even a few minutes per day, everyday, can stabilize blood sugar, allowing all else to settle in the process.
5. Sleep for 8 hours per night
It's all too easy to skimp on sleep when we think we're more productive awake. The thing is, when we're in sleep debt, we are often less productive and wracking up extra belly fat and inflammation due to the fact that our bodies aren't restored and rested from each day.
6. Work it out 3x per week
Once you've revamped your diet to be inclusive and centered upon whole foods, are sleeping well and meditating on the daily, you've got to be sure to break a sweat. Your body and mental health deserves and depends on this last one. Say goodbye to belly fat and ultimately, buh-bye to your blues with these 6 tips.
Which of these are you already doing? Which ones will be the most challenging? It may be useful to start by focusing on one new addition per week, for changes that stick.
