The white U.S. Army veteran who told officers he traveled from Baltimore to New York "with the purpose of killing black men" has been charged with terrorism, authorities announced Tuesday.

James Harris Jackson, 28, was indicted Monday on one count each of first and second degree murder as an act of terrorism in the fatal March 20th stabbing of Timothy Caughman, 66.

Jackson was also charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to The Huffington Post.

"James Jackson prowled the streets of New York for three days in search of a black person to assassinate in order to launch a campaign of terrorism against our Manhattan community and the values we celebrate," New York County District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said in a statement.

Caughman was collecting bottles on the side of the street when Jackson approached him and stabbed him in the back with a 26-inch sword.

Jackson, who had stalked numerous victims prior to his attack on Caughman, turned himself in about a day later. He revealed his plan to kill as many black men as possible to make a "statement" to discourage white women from getting romantically involved with black men.

"It is believed that he was specifically intending to target male blacks for assault based on certain information," New York Police Department Deputy Chief William Aubry said, according to WBAL-TV"It appears that this subject has been harboring these types of feelings for quite some time."

Jackson told the NY Daily News that he wished he'd picked off "a young thug" or "a successful older black man with blonds ... people you see in Midtown" instead of Caughman.

Jackson faces life in prison without parole if convicted of the charges filed against him. His next court date is set for April 13.
