There’s probably no way you’ve avoided the health food revolution. Even if you’ve been living under a rock the words “healthy fats” and “coconut oil” have definitely floated past your eyes. But there’s so much research out there, so much to sort through, so much that you should or could be doing—it’s hard to keep straight. Well let us give you a few insights—specifically 3 insights into some essential vitamins that might just make your day-to-day a little bit better. Remember to talk to you doctor before you start anything new that could affect your health.

Vitamin D

No doubt you’ve heard about this little guy. It’s the trendy super star in the world of vitamins, finally having its (ahem) day in the sun. But what is it and why should you take it? Vitamin D is important for strong and healthy bones. The cool thing is your body can make vitamin D naturally from sunlight, and your body turns vitamin D into a hormone. It’s that hormone that rocks your body and helps it run right. It helps you to absorb calcium and phosphorus to keep it going strong.

The symptoms of vitamin D deficiencies may include tiredness, aches, pains, and even bone pain. The Food and Nutrition Board suggests 600 IU/day in a vitamin D supplement.

Magnesium

Low levels of magnesium can lead to symptoms such as muscle cramps, facial tics, poor sleep, and even chronic pain. If you’re a fan of carbonated beverages you may be low on magnesium. That’s because it binds with magnesium in your body and takes it along on the way out. Bummer news as well if you’re a fan of sweets, get stressed out, drink caffeine or alcohol, and/or are 55 or older. I’d wager any of those things probably apply to you at least once a day (if not, get out of here and go enjoy your perfect life).

The Food and Nutrition Board recommends 200-300 mg/d of magnesium. Read more from Ancient Minerals.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 and -6 are the essential fatty acids that you should have in your life. They’ve been said to help people avoid heart disease. Fish oil is a monumental source of omega-3s and -6s. High rates of these essentials have been linked to lower likelihoods of cancer, depression, and even attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The American Heart Association recommends eating fish—a source of fatty acids—at least twice weekly for all healthy adults. And if you can’t get at fish look into finding a supplement with a blend of fatty acids that meet your needs. You may even see improvement in issues like arthritis, macular degeneration, and allergies.
