This Beauty Routine Is The Secret To Alicia Keys' Flawless 'No Makeup' Look
Alicia Keys has been going makeup-free since she penned an essay in Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter in May 2016 about "uncovering" and embracing her natural beauty. Nearly six months later, she's still going strong — and she's recruited other celebs like Gabrielle Union and even Kim Kardashian to hop on the no-makeup bandwagon with her. But let's be real — can anyone, even someone as beautiful as Alicia Keys, really look THAT gorgeous without a stitch of makeup? I mean, we're only human!
Just as you might've thought, Keys has quite a few beauty products on hand to look that damn good. Her own makeup artist told W Magazine the key to Keys' "I woke up like this" glow is emphasizing the singer's incredible complexion while using a few products to highlight some of her best features.
"Alicia gets regular facials, does acupuncture, and she eats healthy and exercises,” said Dotti, the woman behind Keys' flawlessness. "She knows you have to invest internally for your skin to look great externally. It’s also about how you process your energy. She comes from a very strong place and she comes from a very kind place. That in itself is super important. But it’s about the choices she’s making and the products she’s using. It’s the work of a good team."
TBH, knowing that even Alicia Keys needs help keeping her skin A1 is SO comforting to me.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when formulating a skincare routine for yourself is that your skin is constantly changing.
“Even when (Keys) wore makeup, I would shift her (regimen) up," Dotti continued. Right now, Keys usually only wears makeup if she's performing or taping a segment of The Voice. "I shift everything because that keeps it moving. That’s super important to me because I need to see where the skin is going, and to breathe into its direction."
At the moment, Dotti and Alicia are keeping it cool — literally.
"Right now, we’re doing a lot of ice work to tighten skin, bring the blood to the surface. To basically give it the pop that you need,” she told W Magazine. “I stick a jade roller in ice, so it’s basically freezing when I roll it over her skin. I really, really work into all those areas where I want blood and water and energy brought to the surface."
And on some days, "I’ll look at her skin and say, ‘You need cucumber today,’ so I’ll grate a full cucumber, then place the pulp no higher than her brow bone and no lower than her under-eye bone, not going near sensitive parts of the eye."
"If we’ve got time, I’ll put the pulp all over her face until it draws the heat out of the skin and bring the blood to the top," Dotti added.
So, if the rest of us don't have time to stick our faces in an ice bath or grate an entire cucumber every morning, what kind of things can we use to make our natural glow like Keys'? Here are the products the Grammy winner uses on the regular, according to Dotti:
- MV 9 Oil Cleansing Tonic ($90 from MV Skincare)
- Eminence Clear Skin Probiotic Masque ($49 from Amazon)
- SK-II Facial Treatment Mask ($135 from Sephora)
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer ($23 from Sephora)
- Vita Liberata Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum ($45 from Sephora)
- Mally Evercolor Poreless Face Defender ($40 from Mally Beauty)
Though her makeup collection is pretty skimpy right now, Dotti doesn't think Keys will ever be over cosmetics completely.
"I was just speaking with her earlier and she said, 'There’s going to be a time when I say, ‘You know what? I want a red lip,'" Dotti said.
