Former Miss World Australia finalist Adau Mornyang says her life was ruined "physically, emotionally, and spiritually" after she was raped by two close friends when she was 17.

But she's not staying silent about her trauma — in fact, she recently went on Facebook Live for more than an HOUR to bravely discuss the assault and its aftermath, and start a conversation about rape culture.

In her video recorded April 18, the 22-year-old South Sudanese-Australian model described the day that "has haunted me for six years," when two friends she considered "brothers" encouraged her to drink and then assaulted her on the concrete floor of an Adelaide parking structure.

"I lay there in shock. I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t open my mouth, I couldn’t open my eyes ... my vision was so blurry," Adau said through tears. “I could hear the two boys talking among themselves as I laid there in shock and I knew what was about to happen, but I couldn’t move. My body just shut down."

"As they were ... taking turns, I was lying there crying to God that I just died. I just couldn't believe it was happening," she continued.

According to BuzzFeed, Adau later took a DNA test and reported the assault to police. However, she ended up dropping the charges against the two men because she was scared she'd face retaliation from the South Sudanese community.

Adau also said she was told to drop the case so that she wouldn't ruin the men's lives.

"Girls don't speak out because the family name will be tarnished so they live in silence and feel completely alone and lost," she explained in an interview after her video went viral.

After six years of healing, Adau said she's finally learned that rape is not OK and that "I didn't deserve that day."

"I just hope that they don’t go and do this again to any other girl," she concluded. "I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off me.”
