Trump Quietly Made Asylum Even More Complicated (Even For Children Escaping Violence)
With Trump's daily executive order, important things can easily be pushed under the rug.
The Trump administration sneakily made it even more complicated for immigrants to seek asylum last month, and most of us didn't even notice because...well, the travel ban, the bi-weekly Russian scandal, and our healthcare being taken away, just to name a few things.
But while we were worrying about other issues, it looks like Trump was busy doing everything he could to harshly enforce immigration laws, even if that meant shutting out children who are victims of violence.
While the changes were generally unnoticed, experts believe they will significantly change how immigrants cases are handled.
"Clearly a signal is being given to the field here: We want to be stricter," said former USCIS Director Leon Rodriguez. "I think the intent of it will absolutely be understood by the officers."
While some believe this law will be good for America, most consider the reform un-American.
"The lesson plan is a disappointing shift for the Asylum Division, the part of our government tasked with implementing asylum law and protecting refugees, the most vulnerable people in the world," said Archi Pyati, chief of policy at Tahirih, an organization that defends immigrant women and children escaping violence. "Victims of violence who meet the definition of a refugee will be unfairly turned away before they've even talked to a lawyer, counselor, or judge. That is not due process. That is not protection. That is not American."
And to think we thought Bush was bad...
