Two White Girls Asked Their Black Friend To Prom With A Slavery Reference
It's prom season!
We don't know when asking someone to prom became such a big deal. You're asking someone to be your date to a dance, not asking them to marry you, right? Regardless, it's always fun to see the creative, out-of-the-box prom-posals students come up with.
Some people keep it simple and do it by presenting their prom date with food, like pizza, cupcakes or hot wings. However, some people like to take it to the next level with fully choreographed performances, white horses and thousands of balloons.
The most famously done promposal however, is presenting your future prom date with a sign asks them to prom via a cheesy pick-up-line that typically alludes to pop culture. For example, a Beyoncé and Harry Potter-themed one would be like,"Be the Beyoncé to my Jay-Z at prom" or "I'm seeking a date for prom. Will you be my golden snitch?"
However, two white girls at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, crossed the line with their promposal. The unidentified girls are now all over the internet after a picture of them asking their black friend to prom went viral.
Their sign read, "You may be picking cotton, but we're picking you to go to prom with us."
The now infamous Tweet had received thousands of angry comments.
"Things like this just remind me of the ignorance & stupidity of our society today," one user said. "She probably feels like she has to laugh along with the racist jokes so they will like her. Sad," said another.
What makes this even worse is it looks like they put 0.05 seconds into her promposal. No cupcakes, no flowers, no balloons. In fact, the sign is literally a cardboard box with sharpie on it. Because of that, there's a possibility they could be playing a joke on the girl which is cruel.
The user who posted the tweet, Jon Aro, felt like he had a duty to make their racism public.
“I decided to post it on Twitter because it is 2017 and stuff like this is completely revolting,” he explains. “I had thought we had been past the plight of racism. Apparently we hadn’t. Just as she decided to take a picture of it, let alone post it on social media, I decided to do the same.”
Black Twitter used their detective skills to identify the two white girls and they have since contacted their high school, college choices, and place of work. So justice has been served.
We hope this is the last racist promposal we ever seen...and if it's not, be prepared to have your existence torn apart on the internet.
