'Welcome To Hell' -- SNL Tackles Sexual Harassment In New Skit
"Cat's out of the bag, women get harassed all the time," sang Kate McKinnon in SNL's new skit. Joined with fellow cast members Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, and Leslie Jones, along with host Saoirse Ronan, the women of SNL tackled the massive issue of sexual assault with the skit "Welcome To Hell."

The anthem--that many of us may not have even known we needed--is riddled with truthful facts that remind men of the hell women have been going through for centuries. Letting them know these recent scandals are nothing new, "This been the damn world," states Cecily Strong as they are about to break into song.
Reminding us of the "full nightmare" of sexual harassment, the women call out NBC's Matt Lauer with the line describing the the climate as being "button under the desk bad." Decked in pig-tails, pastel dresses and surrounded by clouds and lollipops, Aidy Bryant reminds us that ,“This ain’t a girl group. We just travel in a group for safety.” #Truth
The satirical pop video sheds more light with every scene, from Kate McKinnon flashing a fist of keys--highlighting a preemptive measure often taken by women when walking alone to prevent or disable an attacker--to touching on the simple fear a creeping van can bring to a woman walking alone due to the stigma attached.
Leslie Jones steps onto the stage later in the video to remind viewers that sexual assault affects all women, unfortunately some more than others. "You do know that it's like a million times worse for a woman of color, right?"...asks Jones. All the women unequivocally understand and agree in unison.
The issue is understood and that is really the key to addressing any of the issues we face in society today, especially with sexual harassment. Understanding the full complexity of the issue and the people who are affected by it, is how we begin the task of tackling these problems.

Ronan went on to sing, “well, House of Cards is ruined, and that really sucks, but here’s a list of stuff that’s ruined for us,” before adding parking, walking, nighttime, and drinking to the list of simple tasks that men perform daily without a passing thought. But for women, these task can contain a plethora of obstacles caused by sexual predators so really, is the cancellation of ONE show as big of an issue? Think on that one folks!
This skit is laced with lots of little reminders that women have been facing and are still facing these issues daily - in and out - of Hollywood.
