What Does 2000 Calories A Day Actually Look Like?
When you look at nutrition facts, you'll see a little note that reads: "Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet."
See it there, right below the Calcium reading? I did some poking around the World Wide Web and found that, according to the Calorie Control Council, the number 2000 was chosen as the standard because it "is the amount of total calories per day that a moderately active adult female (weighing approximately 132 pounds) would need to maintain her weight." Based on your gender, height, weight, and physical activity, you should adjust your daily intake accordingly.
With this magic number of 2,000 in mind, I started thinking about what that actually looks like in terms of real food. BuzzFeed offers this fun take:
Hopefully, you're not eating 19 bananas or 3.80 Big Macs a day. But regardless, it's interesting to see how so little food can add up so quickly.
I then started thinking about some of America's favorite restaurants and what that caloric amount would look like at those spots.
Chipotle
A typical meal at the popular Mexican spot usually includes a burrito, a side, and a drink.
1 Burrito (w/ chicken, brown rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, cheese, guacamole, and romaine lettuce) + Chips & Fresh Tomato Salsa + Patron® Margarita = 2,005 calories
Subway
A typical meal at Subway will include a sandwich, a side, and a drink. To be fair to the sandwich chain, you really have to load up your sandwich to hit the 2,000-calorie mark, as evidenced below.
1 12-Inch Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt on Italian Herbs & Cheese Bread (w/ shredded Monterey Cheddar, black olives, cucumbers, lettuce, red onions, tomatoes, light mayo, Ranch, avocado, and bacon) + 1 Sugar Cookie + 1 21-oz Coke (no ice) = 2,000 calories
Panera Bread
If you choose the right menu items, Panera can be a perfectly healthy choice for lunch. If you're feeling decadent though, you can easily rack up 2,000 calories worth of food. A typical meal may include a sandwich with a drink and cookie.
1 Whole Steak & White Cheddar Panini on French Baguette (no side) + 1 Frozen Mocha + 1 Chocolate Chipper Cookie = 2,020 calories
The Cheesecake Factory
Last up, but certainly not least in terms of calories, is The Cheesecake Factory. A typical meal may be some bread, a small appetizer, and an entrée. But unfortunately, this restaurants serves up single entrées worth more than 2,000 calories! That's before you even dive into a slice of cheesecake.
1 Bistro Shrimp Pasta = 2,290 calories!
.....It shouldn't really come as a surprise how easy it is to eat an entire day's worth of calories in one restaurant meal. I think the takeaway is clear: Be a health-conscience eater! 2,000 calories sounds like a lot, but can look like a little.
