Woman Votes For Trump, And Now His Administration Is Deporting Her Husband Back To Mexico

She put her faith in Trump, and now it’s tearing her family apart.

Helen Beristain voted for the controversial Republican President in the general election, and now, thanks to one of his executive orders, her husband is being deported back to Mexico.

The husband, Roberto, first came to the United States illegally nearly two decades ago. He was first detained after just two years, in 2000, after he took a wrong turn and ended up at the Canadian border. At the time, he was given 60 days to leave to US voluntarily.

But Roberto was expecting a child, and as such simply couldn’t leave. When that initial 60-day window closed, the order reverted to what’s called a final order of removal – but for over 16 years, that order was never acted upon.

Now, courtesy of Trump’s aggressive deportation policies, Roberto is being kicked out of the country. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrived at his family’s home and had a to-the-point conversation with his wife:

“They came outside, knocked on the window,” Helen told reporters. “They said, ‘Are you Roberto’s wife?’ And, I said ‘Yes.’ And, they said, ‘Well, your husband is being detained because of a deportation [order] 16 and a half years ago.’ And, I said, ‘That’s a joke.’ And, they said, ‘No, it’s true.’”

Roberto was taken into ICE custody and is set to be deported on March 24th.

The story gets more egregious when you learn what Roberto’s done with his time in the United States. He’s never committed a crime, and over the years has gone through the necessary processes to obtain a drivers license, social security card and work permit. Today, he owns a restaurant in Indiana.

But that didn’t have any bearing on the decision to deport him. Roberto went to the ICE office for his annual check-in -- that's right, he actually walked into their offices, like he's done for over a decade -- and was immediately detained, based solely on a 16-year old order.

“They’re distraught,” the family’s lawyer told the press. “They have lost a husband, a father, a main breadwinner.”

And to add insult to injury, wife Helen actually voted for the man who’s created this situation. “You want to feel safe when you leave your house. I truly believe that. And, this is why I voted for Mr. Trump.”

She’d also point out, “[Trump] did say the good people would not be deported, the good people would be checked.” That’s certainly not looking like the case here.

“Thanks Obama” used to be a favorite joke of the internet; maybe it’s time we got “Thanks Trump” trending.
