The Soviet test pilot and cosmonaut was apparently screaming and crying as his spacecraft crashed into Earth upon re-entry after a flight in April 1967, killing him. His wishes

for an open-casket funeral were honored, his charred remains on public display.

The body of 22-year-old actress Elizabeth Short (a.k.a. "the Black Dahlia") was found naked and sliced in half on January 15, 1947. Her killer was never found, but you CAN

find photos online of her mutilated corpse as it was discovered at the crime scene (if that's your thing).

Agent Orange is a dangerous herbicide and chemical that was weaponized by the U.S. against the Viet Cong in the 1960s and early '70s. People who were exposed to

the stuff — soldiers and civilians alike — wound up passing on some majorly screwed-up genes to their kids, who were often born with deformities.

The Vacanti Mouse was a lab mouse that had what appeared to be a human ear growing on its back. (It was actually just a mold shaped like an ear

and filled with cartilage cells that had been implanted beneath its skin.) The rodent was part of an experiment in the late 1990s that involved different attempts to grow human

body parts in a lab.

Serial killer and sex offender Jeffrey Dahmer raped and killed a whole bunch of people. And ate them. And left the leftovers in his freezer. Please don't look up pictures from the

crime scene unless you want to be scarred for life.

(I mean, do you REALLY don't need the Holocaust explained to you?) 

Pictures of Nazi Germany's victims are littered across the internet, and they're not for the faint of heart.

In November 1978, more than nine hundred people died in and around a settlement established by the Peoples Temple cult after drinking poisoned Flavor Aid. It was the

largest mass suicide in modern history, and for some reason there are photos of it on the internet.

In this 1932 to 1772 clinical study of untreated syphilis in rural African-American men, doctors straight-up lied to their subjects: Patients were never told that they had the disease,

given treatment, or informed that the study lasted 40 years instead of six months (as originally intended). Many of the victims went blind, deaf, insane, developed horrific ulcers,

and/or passed on the disease to their children and/or partners.

In 2001, a German computer repair technician ate a man (who agreed to being eaten!) for sexual pleasure. A video of their encounter exists; you might not be able to

find it online, though you CAN find some really disturbing "art" related to the incident. 

Once used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding places during the Vietnam War and Tet Offensive, this Vietnamese tourist "attraction" features terrifyingly tiny tunnels. Cue ALL the claustrophobia.

Born in 1840, this British soldier and artist collected dried heads of the Māori people of New Zealand. Then he put them on a wall. Then he took pictures of himself next to

his heads. Seems chill.

Authorities in the coastal city attempted to dispose of a beached whale carcass in November 1970 by blowing it up. Blood and guts went literally everywhere. Great work!

If you ever find yourself typing something along the lines of "vintage insane asylum patients," I beg of you to stop yourself. The pictures you find will be alternatively horrifying

and heartbreaking. 

This infamous serial killer who made clothing and furniture out of his victims, kept their organs in jars, and practiced necrophilia was the inspiration for "Psycho's" Norman Bates and

"The Silence of the Lambs'" Buffalo Bill.

Japanese forces invaded the Chinese city of Nanking in December 1937 and spent the next six weeks brutally raping and murdering its residents. An estimated 40,000 to 300,000-plus people were

killed.

Masses of rats bound together by their tails have been reported as early as the 16th century, mostly in Germany. (Warning: These are REAL gross.)

This 20th century British serial killer was known as the Acid Bath Murderer, and for good reason: He literally killed people by melting

them. IN BATHS OF ACID. And the crime scene photos are out there.

Soldiers stuck in the trenches during World War I suffered in a variety of ways, among them a condition known as "trench foot." Caused by wet and dirty conditions, trench

foot sufferers' feet often turned numb and blue and smelled like rotting flesh, and usually required amputation if left untreated.

The Radium Girls were factory workers who, in the 1910s and '20s, suffered from radiation poisoning while decorating watches using radioactive glow-in-the-dark paint. Have you ever seen the effects

of radiation poisoning? It ain't pretty. 

At best, you'll run into a demonic-looking doll. At worst, you'll find full-on blackface.

When did Halloween costumes go from straight-up terrifying to sexy cat? Either way, people really knew how to do fear back in the day.

Known as the "liquidators," these poor souls were the first to go in and investigate the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union — and none of them knew

how dangerous it really was. Needless to say, things did not end well for them as a result of all that radiation.

Born in 1870, Fish was an American serial killer who ate kids, and for some reason photos of the crime scenes he left behind exist online.

This painful-seeming tradition of the Mentawai people and other cultures around the world has spiritual and aesthetic value among certain communities.

At first glance, this 1930s device looks like a medieval torture device. In fact, its real use was to take facial measurements for makeup application. Still looks terrifying, though. 

Cult leader Charles Manson and his followers killed a number of people in the late 1960s, with actress Sharon Tate (who was eight and a half months pregnant at

the time of her death) being one of their most notable victims. Photos taken at the gory  scenes of their crimes will make you want to bleach your eyeballs.

From the shadows left behind by the people who were vaporized to the slow, agonizing deaths of temporary survivors, photos taken of the bombs' aftermath are grisly, to say

the least.

This Soviet serial killer was known by many nicknames, one among them being the "Red Ripper." He was responsible for the sexual assaults and murders of 52 women and

children (whose crime scene snapshots can be found online) in the 1970s and '80s.

The U.S. government built a fake town on this plot of land northwest of Las Vegas in 1951 and dropped atomic bombs on it to test the effectiveness of said

bombs. Super creepy to look back on.

Nearly 150 people were killed in this 1911 garment factory fire because all exits were locked to prevent workers from taking breaks; many of them tried to jump out of

windows to their safety as the building burned. (Thankfully, the tragedy sparked legislation that improved working conditions.)

This brilliant Russian scholar was arrested in 2011 after the bodies of more than two dozen young girls were found in his home. He had dug up their corpses from

local graveyards and mummified them himself before dressing them up and turning them into his life-sized "dolls." (There are pictures AND a video from investigators' walk inside his house of

horrors.)

The event itself wasn't all that gruesome, per say, but the pictures of the melted wax figures' "corpses" are pretty freakin' freaky.

In 1997, 39 members of this UFO religious cult opted to leave the Earth via mass suicide in order to "evolve" into the next stage of existence. All of

their bodies were found at the San Diego mansion they'd rented for the event, eerily laid out in bunk beds.

Duchenne was a 19th century scientist and neurological expert who trigger muscle contractions on his subjects' faces, which he believed were somehow linked to their souls. Some of the photos

his experiments produced are pretty disturbing.

The TWA Flight 800 blew up and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near New York in 1996, killing all 230 people on board.
