Big ups to Blade for being a serious contender in the Marvel universe and for setting the tone for the Marvel comic book movies.
Wesley Snipes is a bad ass,
-
half-vampire, half-mortal vampire slayer who wants retribution for his mother’s death.
The Blade trilogy had a ton of promise and potential, but unfortunately fell flat as the last installment of
-
the series was released. Nonetheless, this leather wearing, black vampire wasn’t one to mess with. I think it’s safe to ordain Blade as the OG of black superhero movies.

If you haven’t seen The Meteor Man, then we're going to need for you to grab your Fire Stick or go dig through the Wal-Mart $5 DVD bin and watch
-
this movie ASAP.
The Meteor Man gave us what a lot of other superhero movies couldn’t do. It gave us a look at what it would be like if
-
a regular, schmegular guy from the hood was endowed with superpowers.
Robert Townsend plays a substitute teacher whose lack of confidence in himself heightens his struggle against the Golden Lords
-
gang from terrorizing his Washington DC neighborhood. What made this film special is its comical relief and #BlackExcellence cast.

Who is the nerdiest superhero in all the land? While transforming genius scientists into superheroes isn’t necessarily new, Blankman was a fresh take on the geeks-to-martyr narrative.
I mean, who
-
can forget the scene when Blankman locked up his first kiss from leading lady, Robin Givens? In that scene, we got to witness Blankman catching more than a vibe.
With
-
David Alan Grier as his side-kick, this movie is a must see to really appreciate the glow up of black superhero movies.

Spawn is a film that warns micromanaging, evil bosses everywhere: Don’t come for us.
When an assassin’s boss flat out murders him, the condemned soul shakes hands with the devil
-
and returns to earth as Spawn, a vengeance-hungry soldier from the depths of hell.
Spawn teaches us that not all superhero movies are created equally. This movie was a huge
-
disappointment back in the late 90s. The aesthetics were dope (except for the wack CGI effects), but the storyline was about as flat as a bottle of Coke that someone
-
forgot to tighten the cap on.

Last, and definitely not least, Steel is the blueprint for what not to do ever again in any black superhero film. Shaq (yes, Shaquille O’Neal) plays a soldier whose weapon
-
designs for the army are sabotaged, but only for him to find them outsourced to the hood.
Even in the film world, Shaq couldn’t escape his rep for not being
-
able to make a basket. LOL Shout out to the director for pointing out his flaws numerous times throughout the movie.
We won’t go too hard on this film,
-
it has it's good points. But the point is, everything from the corny gestures to sluggish action scenes gives us enough reasons as to why this newly released Black Panther
-
trailer is a blessing from the film gods.
With the Black Panther movie coming out in February 2018, it’s time to pay our respects to the Black superheroes who paved the way for a film this dope to be made.
From cringe worthy attempts at elevating black superheroes to characters that had us hunched over in laughter, we tip our hats to the dope films and simultaneously pour out a little liquor to the movie fails.
Don’t front like you don’t remember when our superheroes were fighting the evils of the hood.
